Binge Training

training concept with education elements

If you have gone through few of my previous posts, you must have an idea of how rampage and competitive is the training industry going nowadays. In particular, if you take into consideration the digital era, the training is going through huge paradigm shifts than ever before. Seeing the previous trends, the latest paradigms and potential huge changes, we can say that we have almost entered an era of binge training. What exactly is the binge training and why it is being labelled with this name, what are the features and consequences for the corporate training and development industry in this regard, is something interesting to be shared with you. In this post, we would focus binge training core traits and determine its real meaning. Consequently, we would also be able to relate it to our current training strategy.

Binge training has actually triggered the rapid changes in the industry, making the employees training quite critical both in terms of significance and structure. The economy is also changing and the rate of this change is also gradually and constantly rising. Being a professional training and development programs developer and executor, I feel that globalization, new technologies and rising prices of energy are impacting all businesses, whether they realize it or not. Let me share with you an instance of GWI that how they have been implementing the employee training programs to keep up with the training needs of today.

Recently, the GWI employees were given combined session for learning wireless broadband from the Midcoast Internet person[1]. Employees are lucky at GWI since they are in high tech industry so the shift is in their face and doesn’t sneak up on them. There are required to develop on a constant basis newer, better and faster services like cloud computing, Gigabit internet access and Hosted PBX, and have to give much time to learn the underlying technologies. They also market themselves in a different way, run their IT organization in a unique manner and operate with special emphasis on various critical factors that many other organizations don’t usually consider.  As per the training managers, they have invested in forming these skills in their existing teams and this has been achieved through the idea of binge training, on which entire training strategy was based on.  Throwing away the redundant and superfluous learning tools and including more practical, comprehensive and more diverse training concepts at a time so as to achieve training goals in the more efficient way.

In view of ever increasing change, and the rising penetration of binge training, businesses must structure themselves so as to adapt faster to the changing training needs and conditions. It is neither economical nor practical to be continuously hiring new employees for meeting the new needs arising because of rising fluctuations and standards[2]. The only viable strategy is to hoe the talented people of good character and keeping training them to inculcate new skills rather than just polishing the existing ones. Training and education would have to be a fundamental competency for any business that wants to get success over the next decade. Hence, understanding the idea of binge training and determining which way is the right one to go for, becomes critically important at this stage.

Being a trainer, whether I like it or not, I am constantly showered by learning theory. Two theories that are stuck with me, and which I was able to put into execution are first, that profound learning needs great repetition and second, that diverse people learn successfully from diverse mediums. For these reasons, I have always been trying to deliver training and education in as many diverse ways as possible[3].

Another area of concern while taking into consideration the binge training is the virtual learning and training. In today’s competitive corporate landscape, businesses need to adopt emerging technologies in order to leave risk left behind. As businesses grow and add more employees, virtual learning content enablement (LCE) is surely able to enhance the pace and ease for delivering information across the organization[4]. Virtual training helps growing the new hires for acclimating them to company culture, policies and the procedures. In presence of binge training, you might not be able to accomplish these objectives if you are not fully prepared for it.

Changing ways and practices or the ways we do things around here, is a sensible and increasingly general response to the realization that training and learning is a one trick pony to an extent, which can’t cover the broad spectrum of the needs in today’s demanding and fast moving workplaces[5]. The dominant structure of the physical content design and transmission that has been use since last 100 years, is being provided as increasingly more costly and less effective when compared with the modern alternatives. The need to develop capability well, flexibly and fast thus becomes critical.
