Having a workplace that is enjoyable for everyone who is there increases productivity and lowers turnover rates. While there are improvements you can make to your physical business to make life easier for those who are there, there are also activities you can endorse that will lighten the mood of your employees. Here are a few things you can do to make a happy workplace for those who work for you.

Open Things Up

The floor plan of your business can be a starting point for making things easier for your workers. Opening up the desk plan so that they can interact and work together. This allows for collaboration especially if two or more people are on the same project. Being around other people instead of being isolated in a cubicle will make for a more productive atmosphere in your workplace.

A Place To Play

You want your company to be a place to work, however making a space to relax and unwind can create an atmosphere your employees want to come back to every day. Whether you incorporate this in your Washington DC Office Space or your building on the west coast, setting up a recreational space can be cheap and a huge benefit in the long run. Set up a table for puzzles or board games. Hook up a video game system to a television or bring in a vintage video game. Purchase a ping pong or pool table. Install comfortable sofas and chairs for people to relax when they have downtime. Setting up a fun, trendy break space will give your workers a reason why they want to work there.

The Great Outdoors

Organize days when the weather is nice for your staff to go outside and work. Set up a workspace on picnic tables or benches or have those who wish to find a space in the grass. Be sure to announce the day ahead of time so that they dress in attire that is comfortable for the outdoors and have an alternate plan in case of rain. If this is ill suited for your type of business, consider setting up your staff at an arboretum or atrium so they can still enjoy nature while in a more useful work setting.

Make the Work Space More Appealing

If you want a more structured space or are limited on the improvements you can make, there are simple changes you can make that will improve the moods of your staff. Clean the area everyday and have specific places for documents and supplies so the area is free of debris. Open up your window treatments to let as much natural light as you are able into the room. Paint the walls in bright colors to liven up your employees’ spirits. Invest in desks and chairs that are ergonomically correct and are pleasant to sit in and work at. Get a snack machine, pop machine, or coffee pot or find a way to offer these to your staff to have fuel to get them through the day. Add plants to the office area. If you bring in vegetation, it will add one more vibrant color to the room as well as help clean the air with in space.

Time To Celebrate

If your company has hit a milestone of it is an employee’s birthday, have a party. Cater in cake and snacks. Set aside time in the day to take time off to enjoy what is brought in and each other’s company. If having a celebration is difficult during work time, reserve a party room at a nearby restaurant to have your party. Depending on your budget, you can cover from drinks and appetizers to a full meal. Call the manager and see if they can provide a discount for the number of people in your party.

Going Home

If your company has the network capability to do so, allow your employees to work from the comfort of their own home. Be certain they have a wireless connection or a way to hardwire their laptop into the internet. Letting you staff work from where they live provides them with an area they love and gives them the opportunity to work in a chore or two between work tasks. If they are a parent and have a sick child, this allows them to take care of their child while keeping a sick day they may need later for themselves. If this works for you, hold a seminar or two to instruct your employees on how to operate any additional equipment or how to maneuver on a virtual network.
